Model-Based Systems Engineering Colloquium

Industrial and Systems Engineering in Healthcare Transformation

Priantha Devapriya
Healthcare Re-Engineering Center at Geisinger

Host: John Baras

Round Table:  2:00 p.m.

Abstract
Over the last two decades, various national bodies including the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences have consistently published on how Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) can be utilized to accelerate improvements in healthcare. However, the healthcare industry has yet to embrace ISyE to reduce waste and increase reliability of care delivery processes. Geisinger Health System (Geisinger) in Danville, PA, has been using ISyE approaches to produce positive results and dramatic improvements in inpatient, outpatient, and transitions of care settings. During this presentation, Dr. Priyantha Devapriya will share how Geisinger uses a range of ISyE methods including predictive modeling, discrete-event simulation modeling, and optimization modeling to improve patient access to care, outcomes, efficiency, and patient flow. In addition, Dr. Devapriya will discuss the overall challenges in applying ISyE in the healthcare environment and opportunities for further research.

Biography
Dr. Devapriya is an engineer dedicated to improving the patient outcome and operational efficiency, and reducing the cost of healthcare delivery through industrial and systems engineering methods. Dr. Devapriya has provided administrative, technical, and research leadership to the development of multiple predictive models, scheduling optimization models, and discrete event simulation models to improve outcome and efficiency at Geisinger Health System. As an industrial engineer and a lean six sigma black belt, Dr. Devapriya has shown how to integrate such models into electronic medical records, design and test interventions, and successfully change workflows to make a lasting impact on patient outcomes. Prior to joining healthcare, Dr. Devapriya worked in the wine making industry and fast food industry improving manufacturing and distribution processes. Dr. Devapriya received his Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering and operations research from Clemson University and his MS degree in management and administrative sciences from University of Texas at Dallas. Currently, Dr. Devapriya is the Director Research Operations at Healthcare Re-engineering Center at Geisinger in Danville, PA.
