Title: Optimization Techniques for Entropy-Based Moment Closures in Linear Transport
Abstract: The kinetic equation is used to model many physical phenomena, ranging from gas dynamics to semiconductors to radiative transport and more, but the large state space of the system can make simulation difficult. The entropy-based moment closure model of the
kinetic equation reduces the size of the state space and has attractive theoretical and practical properties, but most implementations have avoided the defining optimization problem. We use the linear one-dimensional slab-geometry model to expose the main challenges to the use of numerical optimization and propose anisotropic regularization, fixed quadrature, and an adaptive-basis
optimization algorithm can be used to numerically solve the entropy-based moment closure model practically. We develop manufactured solutions to test our algorithm and also present its performance ontwo standard test problems.
