Alumnus Matthew C. Stamm (Ph.D. EE, 2012), who was advised during his Ph.D. studies by Christine Kim Eminent Professor K.J. Ray Liu, is the recipient of a 2016 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award for “Scaling Forensic Algorithms for Big Data and Adversarial Environments.” The five-year award is worth $583,577.

His research focuses on an emerging area of information security known as information forensics, which involves developing techniques to detect multimedia forgeries such as falsified images and videos. These techniques are capable of determining where an image or video originated, and if it has been altered or falsified. The research conducted under Dr. Stamm's NSF CAREER Award is aimed at addressing these problems by designing multimedia forensic algorithms capable of:(1) operating in "big data" environments, (2) exposing complex forgeries, and (3) responding to adversarial attackers attempting to fool forensic algorithms. To accomplish these aims, the research is drawing from a wide variety of fields such as signal processing, estimation theory, statistical hypothesis testing, machine learning, optimization theory, and game theory.

Stamm is an assistant professor in the Information Forensics and Security and Signal Processing Departments at Drexel University. He joined the Drexel faculty in 2013. He leads the Multimedia and Information Security Lab (MISL) where he conducts research on signal processing and information security. He completed his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 2012 at the University of Maryland. Additionally, he develops and studies anti-forensic countermeasures that an information attacker can use to disguise their forgeries. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Defense Forensics and Biometrics Agency (DFBA).
