Alumnus Named Executive Director for Cingular

Alumnus Mark Austin, a 1986 B.S. graduate in Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland, was named the new Executive Director of Network Operations for South Florida of Cingular Wireless.

In his new role with the nation's largest wireless carrier, Austin is responsible for the implementation and performance of the South Florida network, which covers from Vero Beach to the Florida Keys.

Austin has more than 18 years experience in the telecommunications industry. He has published more than 20 reviewed technical papers and has been granted seven patents. In addition to his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, he holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech and is the recipient of the Sigma Xi Thesis Award for his research on various topics related to optimizing cellular systems.
