Chellappa Elevated to AAAI Fellow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair and Minta Martin Professor of Engineering Rama Chellappa (ECE/CS/UMIACS/CFar) is among those elected in the 2015 class of Fellows of The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Chellappa was recognized for his “significant contributions to Markov random fields, 3D recovery from single and multiple images and image/video-based recognition.”

Chellappa’s research areas include signal and image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, multi-dimension stochastic processes, statistical interference, image analysis, robust and secure biometrics, and artificial intelligence in computer vision.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's Fellows program was started in 1990 to recognize individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions—usually over at least a ten-year period—to the field of artificial intelligence.

Fellows' accomplishments range from pioneering advances in the theory of artificial intelligence, to unusual accomplishments in artificial intelligence technology and AI applications. Leadership in the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence or similar scientific organizations that promote the advancement of artificial intelligence through educational programs and support of forums for the exchange of ideas also plays a role in the selection process.

AAAI will celebrate the newly elected Fellows at a dinner during the Association’s annual conference, AAAI-15 in Austin, Texas on January 27, 2015. Additional information about the AAAI 2015 Fellows, as well as previous AAAI Fellows can be found on the AAAI awards site.
