Title:  Hybrid Si-GaAs photonic crystal cavity for lasing and nonlinear optics.


Abstract: Silicon photonics is an excellent platform for photonic integrated circuits
for low-power consumption, low-cost manufacturing, and on-chip integration with
electronics. However, silicon has an indirect bandgap and a small nonlinear optic
coefficient, resulting in poor lasing and nonlinear behavior. The heterogeneous
integration of III-V materials with silicon provides a way to overcome silicon’s
limited emissive and absorptive properties at telecom wavelength toward a broad
range of photonic applications. There has been significant research on the
heterogeneous integration of III-V material with silicon. However, it still needs to
determine how to engineer these modes to make photonic crystal cavities. In this
research proposal, using 3D finite-difference time-domain simulation, we propose
a hybrid Si-GaAs photonic crystal cavity design for low threshold lasing and
bistability. The hybrid cavity consists of a patterned silicon waveguide nanobeam
evanescently coupled to a GaAs slab with quantum dots, enabling cavity mode
confinement in GaAs without directly patterning that operates at telecom
wavelengths. This design allows strong interaction with the active material in the
GaAs slab for applications such as low-power-threshold lasing and highly nonlinear
optoelectronic devices. Our heterogeneous integration via a hybrid cavity design
indicates an optimistic approach for achieving on-chip light generation and low-
power nonlinear platforms for silicon photonics.
