Big Data: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue

A Day-Long Conference Exploring the Impact of Data-Intensive Research

Big Data, a one day conference and workshop within the UMD Libraries’ Interdisciplinary Dialogue Series, will bring the campus community together to discuss big data at the University of Maryland. Throughout the conference, several leading campus scholars will discuss how big data has impacted their respective fields and research. We will also hear from a number of service units and student groups to learn how big data is being used across the campus. The conference portion will be followed by a librarian-led data workshop designed to introduce concepts, resources, and methods for leveraging data-intensive research.

Event Background

The term “big data” has been in circulation since the 1990s and now dominates the academic community throughout the entire disciplinary spectrum, from the hard sciences to the humanities. Any definition of big data is likely to depend on the context in which the question is asked, and the management of it, including architecture, technology, and applications, varies from one project to another. Big data is an integral part of both academia and private industry, and impacts many aspects of our lives as private citizens.

Comprised of different academic departments and support units, the campus community rarely has a chance to meet and share ideas, successes and lessons learned among ourselves. The University of Maryland Libraries, as a campus unit deeply engaged with big data and serving all disciplines and programs on campus, are an ideal host for this event.
