The Cognitive Basis for Engineering Design

Speaker: Jonathan Cagan, Ph.D., P.E., Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University

Abstract: Design is a human activity, so understanding how people solve hard problems in a creative and effective way could significantly impact how design is done. The goal of this research has been to understand the cognitive mechanisms of creative engineering design. This talk will review insights gained from more than two decades of collaborative research in this area. Aspects of fixation, analogical search, teams, brain imaging, and computation will be discussed.
