Title:

Diversity of usage in cellular communications

By:

Tuan Ta (Johnny)

Abstract:

Cooperation among cellular users is a well-studied field. Traditional cooperation mechanisms include MIMO techniques, multihop routing, etc. In this talk I will discuss a new cooperation opportunity through what we call diversity of usage. In particular, I will describe how smartphone usage characteristics motivate a cooperative system that improves battery life in LTE networks. I will describe a framework in which the performance gain can be properly measured. I will also show how this system can be implemented as a Proximity Service in future releases of LTE.
