Signal Processing Research in the ECE Department

Rama Chellappa
Chair and Professor
Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
University of Maryland

Abstract
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UMD is one of the top departments in signal and image processing. In this talk, Dr. Chellappa will provide an overview of ongoing research in sparse representations for signals and images, information security, bio-inspired signal processing, speech processing and computer vision.

He also will discuss recent profress made in developing robust methods for still image and video-based facial recognition. He recently led a five-year effort to make facial recognition possible at distances beyond 100 meters.

ECE is also working to develop active user authentication for mobile platforms such as smart phones. Researchers are constructing fusion algorithms for these platforms to allow for continuous authentication of the user, based on the user's screen fingerprint, touch signature and face.
