Minta Martin Professor of Engineering Rama Chellappa (ECE/UMIACS/CS) has been invited to speak as the University of Delaware Computer Information Sciences (CIS) Distinguished Speaker on May 11, 2011. His talk is titled, “Representation and Recognition of Patterns in Video.”

With the ubiquitous presence of video cameras, new challenges to video-based pattern recognition problems are emerging.Video-based pattern recognition problems have applications in homeland security, healthcare, battlefield awareness, and video indexing and anomaly detection.

In this talk, Chellappa will first discuss some of the representations used for pattern recognition in videos, including shape, texture, motion and behavior. The design of statistical methods for recognizing faces and their expressions, bee dances, and human activities will also be discussed.

The talk will conclude with a discussion of unsupervised methods for clustering and summarization of video sequences.
