ECE alumnus Sanjeev Khudanpur (Ph.D., '97) has recently been promoted to the position of Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

During his time as a graduate student at the University of Maryland, Sanjeev was advised by Prof. Prakash Narayan (ECE/ISR). Before earning his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, he received the B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Dr. Khudanpur has served on the faculty of JHU since 1996, first as Associate Research Scientist in the Center for Language and Speech Processing, and later as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science.

Khudanpur's research interests are focused on the application of information theoretic methods to human language technologies such as automatic speech recognition, machine translation and natural language processing. All these technologies make heavy use of statistical models of human language. He is interested in understanding the structure of such models and in estimating their parameters from data.
