Research in the Maryland Optics Group covers a broad range of topics including Free Space Optical (FSO) Communications, biosensors, near-field antenna characterization, nano-optics, plasmon spectrosocopy, and fiber and free-space laser interferometry. We have extended the ideas of scanning tunneling optical microscopy (STOM) or near-field (evanascent field) microscopy with our heterodyne single-mode fiber probes. By tapering an uncoated fiber to a taper on the order of 100nm in diameter we have been able to build a scanning microscopy, with sub-optical (approx. 100nm) resolution.
