Dr. Calin Belta Joins ECE

Dr. Calin Belta

Dr. Calin Belta has joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as the Brendan Iribe Endowed Professor.  He will have a joint appointment with the Department of Computer Science.  Previously, he was a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Bioinformatics at Boston University, where he was also the founding director of the BU Robotics Lab.

Belta’s research interests include dynamics and control theory, with particular emphasis on cyber-physical systems, formal methods, and applications to robotics and systems biology.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS).  Awards received include the 2008 AFOSR Young Investigator Award, the 2005 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the 2017 IEEE TCNS Outstanding Paper Award. 

The Brendan Iribe Endowed Professorship was established by alum Brendan Iribe (ECE ’01) and is supported by the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative (MEI) through the State of Maryland.  The professorship is held by experts in robotics, autonomy, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
