Non-Chemical Betavoltaic Power Source for MEMS Sensors

Muhammad Khan
Lead MEMS Fabrication Engineer; PhD Student
NSWC Indian Head and University of Maryland

Muhammad Khan is the lead MEMS fabrication engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division, and an electrical engineering PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. His background is in the design and fabrication of MEMS devices and solid-state electronics. In this seminar, Muhammad will talk about non-chemical betavoltaic power sources for MEMS sensors. MEMS sensors require tiny power sources with long lifetimes and functionality at extreme environments (high/low temperatures) as they are often placed in remote locations where frequent change of batteries can be burdensome and dangerous. Betavoltaic power sources can be a great choice for MEMS sensors as they have higher energy density (103 times larger), longer lifetime (10-100 years), and wider operational temperature range (-60 to 150°C) than current state of the art chemical batteries.

About the The Mid-Atlantic Micro/Nano Alliance (MAMNA) virtual seminars
These virtual seminars are livestreamed on YouTube Thursdays from 3:00 to 3:30 pm, and feature speakers from the MAMNA community from across the Mid-Atlantic region. Each talk is approximately 20 minutes long with 10 minutes of Q&A. The talks are also archived for future viewing.
