Title: Recent Research Accomplishments at the Maryland Power Electronics Lab

Abstract: Power electronics has emerged as an enabling technology in deployment of next
generation of systems including but not limited to transportation systems, energy harvesting
applications, robotics, industrial systems, smart grids and data centers, among many others. The
demand for higher efficiency, higher power density, specific power and better thermal management
poses stringent challenges for these power electronic converters to accommodate in these systems.
The presentation will outline some of the recent research accomplishments at the University of Maryland at College
Park’s Maryland Power Electronics Laboratory (MPEL), including compact, high-reliability, and low-cost residential
solar microinverters, thermally integrated high-power density DC-DC converters with additive manufacturing, Gallium
Nitride based modular regulated transformer rectifier units for avionic applications, and wireless Charing systems for
low-voltage industrial applications. Furthermore, it will put forward some of the current research areas, as well as
future thoughts.

Bio: Alireza Khaligh is a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and
the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) in the University of Maryland (UMD). His major research interests
include modeling, design, and control of power electronic converters for transportation electrification and
renewable energy systems. He is an author/co-author of more than 220 journal and conference papers. He
is also the Founder and President of AmpX Technologies, Inc., a technology company focused on the
design and manufacturing of chargers for electric vehicles.
Prof. Khaligh is a recipient of various recognitions and awards including 2024 Linda Clement Outstanding
Advisor Award, 2022 IEEE PELS Vehicle and Transportation Systems Achievement Award, 6th Nagamori
Award, 2020 ECE Jimmy Lin Award for Innovation, 2019 ISR Outstanding Systems Engineering Faculty
Award, and 2017 UMD Office of Technology Commercialization Overall Invention of the Year Award. He
was the General Chair of the 2016 IEEE Applied Power Electronic Conference (APEC), and the General
Chair of the 2013 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference (ITEC). He is a Fellow of the Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) International and is currently the Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Transactions on
Transportation Electrification (TTE).
