Alumnus Gordon England Nominated for Deputy Secretary of Defense

Gordon England, ’61, an alumnus of the University of Maryland’s Electrical and Computer Engineering department, has been nominated by President George W. Bush to fill the position of Deputy Secretary of Defense.

The nomination of England, who currently serves as Secretary of the Navy, is pending approval of the U.S. Senate. He formerly served as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security from January to September, 2003.

A native of Baltimore and an electrical engineering major here at the Clark School, England currently lives in Texas.

England served as executive vice president of General Dynamics Corporation from 1997 until 2001. Previously, he served as executive vice president of the Combat Systems Group, president of General Dynamics Fort Worth aircraft company (later Lockheed), president of General Dynamics Land Systems Company, and as the principal of a mergers and acquisition consulting company.

If approved by the Senate, Mr. England will fill the position vacated by Paul Wolfowitz, who was confirmed as the next head of the World Bank last month.
