Engineering at Maryland magazine celebrates the power of philanthropy, impact on students

The Spring 2022 issue of Engineering at Maryland magazine is in mailboxes soon!

In this issue, join our celebration of the University of Maryland reaching its ambitious $1.5 billion fundraising goal during Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland. The feat is a testament to the collective power of Terps working together—across campus, colleges, and disciplines—for the greater good of our entire community and, ultimately, society.

And there’s no better way to measure the impact of philanthropy than through its transformation of the student experience: Scholarships that offset the burden of today’s educational costs. Research experiences that sharpen skills and expand horizons. New labs and entire buildings that accelerate collaboration, innovation, competition, and entrepreneurship to new heights, both on and beyond campus. Academic and extracurricular programs that can be the lifeline to push a student across the graduation stage.

Thanks to the generosity of Maryland Engineering’s extended community of donors and friends, a new and diverse generation of engineers is energized and empowered to dream, design, collaborate—and make a difference.

In two feature stories, hear directly from a few of the fearless Maryland engineers who are behind the dollars and cents of UMD’s historic giving campaign. “Portraits of Impact” shares inspiring snapshots from eight undergraduate scholarship recipients at Maryland Engineering, and “Overflowing with Ideas” looks inside the Clark School’s newest competitive advantage: the E.A. Fernandez IDEA (Innovate, Design and Engineer for America) Factory, a visionary new facility named for the Maryland Engineering alum whose foresight and philanthropy helped bring it to College Park’s campus, Emilio Fernandez ’69.

Additional issue highlights include:

  • SPACE: Alum contributions aboard the James Webb Space Telescope
  • GOING NUCLEAR: A cleaner, greener, more equitable future
  • BLAST OFF: Student team heads to Spaceport America Cup
  • IN MEMORIAM: Remembering campus trailblazer Hiram Whittle
