Mayergoyz Co-Authors Article on Magnetization Dynamics in APS Physical Review B - Rapid Communication
Alford L. Ward Professor and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Isaak Mayergoyz has co-authored an article on magnetization dynamics that will be published in the American Physical Society (APS) Physical Review B - Rapid Communication. The title of the article is "Magnetization Dynamics Driven by a Jump-Noise Process," and the co-authors are Giorgio Bertotti, and Claudio Serpico. Noise effects in magnetization dynamics are becoming increasingly important because they control long-term reliability of data storage in hard drives as well as the quality of signals in spin-torque nano-oscillators in the emerging area of spintronics. The paper outlines a novel and promising approach to the study of noise effects in magnetization dynamics. The central novelty of the proposed methodology is to account for average and fluctuating effects of actual physical noise within the framework of one random process. Random switching of magnetization (i.e., spontaneous erasure of stored data) caused by noise is studied, and it is demonstrated that the switching rate has different temperature dependence at relatively high and very low temperatures. This is consistent with experimental observations and it is usually attributed to the physical phenomena of "macroscopic tunnelling" of magnetization. Prof. Mayergoyz co-authored a book with Bertotti and Serpico in 2009, titled "Nonlinear Magnetization Dynamics in Nanosystems."
