General Technical Elective Courses

Electrical and Computer Engineering majors must complete 3 credits of General Technical Electives as part of their graduation requirements. Courses must be 300- or 400-level STEM courses and may be taken within or outside the ECE department, including additional ENEE or CMSC courses.

Approved Courses

The ECE Undergraduate Office maintains a list of approved General Technical Elective courses that students typically have the prerequisites to take. Courses may not appear on the prohibited course list or be designated for non-majors (e.g., an ASTR course restricted to non-Astronomy majors).

Additional Courses

Upper-level courses not on the approved list may be considered case-by-case. To qualify, a course must align with the student’s professional goals and have a technical component. Courses on the prohibited list are not eligible for approval. Contact your academic advisor to begin the evaluation process.

Special Programs

• Minors: Students using minor courses as General Technical Electives must have 9 additional unique credits that are not also being used toward major requirements.
• Gemstone: GEMS396, GEMS397, GEMS496, and GEMS497 may be used as General Technical Electives.
• Quest, Honors, and Hinman CEO: 300- and 400-level courses may be used, except capstone courses.
• Navy ROTC: NAVY300 and NAVY400 may be used. No other ROTC courses qualify.

Course Permissions

ECE advisors cannot provide permission for courses offered by other departments. Students are responsible for obtaining the required permission from the offering department. Some courses may not grant permission until the beginning of the semester. For courses in other engineering departments, use the non-major course permission form.
