Title: Fundamentals of Gate Drivers and Protection Techniques for SiC MOSFETs
Abstract: Power electronics enables applications ranging from data centers to electric vehicles, and at the heart of these systems is a small but critical component: the gate driver. This talk introduces how gate drivers control the switching behavior of SiC MOSFETs and protect them under short-circuit faults, which are essential for achieving high efficiency and reliable operation of power electronics systems. A brief example based on commercial gate driver ICs will be used to illustrate key parameters selection. Common integrated protection schemes—including undervoltage lockout, active Miller clamping, and desaturation protection—will be discussed, along with the emerging advanced short-circuit protection approaches for SiC MOSFETs. Different driving approaches will also be briefly introduced. Designed for senior undergraduate students, this talk aims to build an intuitive understanding of gate driver operation and highlight the importance of protection in ensuring robust power electronic systems.
Bio: Zhehui Guo received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Florida State University in 2022. His doctoral research focused on gate driver design and protection for medium-voltage SiC MOSFETs, where he was the first to demonstrate a power–signal integrated isolated gate driver on 10 kV SiC MOSFETs. He is currently a Member of R&D Staff at the Milan Power Electronics Laboratory (MPEL), Delta Electronics (Americas) Ltd, working on the next-generation data center and EV power solutions. He was the recipient of the Prize Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics in 2023.
