Chembo Published in APS Reviews of Modern Physics
A. James Clark School of Engineering Associate Professor Yanne K. Chembo (ECE/IREAP) recently published a paper in Reviews of Modern Physics, edited by the American Physical Society (APS).
The review, “Optoelectronic Oscillators with Time-Delayed Feedback,” was co-authored with Daniel Brunner, Maxime Jacquot, and Laurent Larger of CNRS in France. It explores the complexity inherent to these oscillators, as well as their impact in modern science and technology.
Optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs) are laser-driven systems characterized by a delayed feedback loop formed with two concatenated optical and electronic branches. Beyond fundamental research, these oscillators have also inspired a wide and diverse set of applications, such as optical chaos communications, pseudorandom number generation, optoelectronic machine learning based on reservoir computing, random number generation, ultrapure microwave generation, optical pulse-train synthesis, and sensing.
The review lays a particular emphasis on the impact of OEOs for applications that are at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence and communication engineering, thereby suggesting that OEOs will play a major role in nonlinear, microwave, and quantum photonics in the years to come.
