Prof. Mario Dagenais

ECE Professor Mario Dagenais described his work on semiconductor optical amplifier switch matrices for optical header recognition in an invited talk at OPTO2008, a part of the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Photonics West 2008 conference.

All-optical header recognition using a tree-structure was reported for a three-bit address and traffic at 10 Gb/s was directed through the switch, according to Dagenais’ research. This work was supported by Cisco, a Clark School Corporate Partner.

The Photonics West conference combines four different parallel conferences focusing on different aspects of photonics, including biomedical optics (BIOS), lasers and applications (LASE), integrated optical engineering (OPTO), and micro and nano-fabrication (MOEMS MEMS), and an exhibition boasting more than 1,000 exhibitors. The technical conference, courses and exhibition pulled in more than 17,000 visitors during the week-long event. There were 3,000 technical presentations at the meeting.
