ECE Alumnus Saniie Named Filmer Endowed Chair at IIT
ECE alumnus Jafar Saniie (B.S., EE, '74) has been named the Walter and Harriet Filmer Endowed Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The chair was established in 1995 in memory of Walter L. and Harriet B. Filmer and recognizes Saniie’s outstanding educational and research contributions in computer engineering during the last 25 years.
Dr. Saniie currently serves as a professor, associate chair, graduate program director, director of computer engineering and director of the Ultrasonic Information Processing Laboratory at IIT. He has gained national and international visibility for his scholarly work in embedded computing and ultrasonic signal processing, and has published more than 195 journal and conference papers in these areas. His recent research contributions have included signal processing algorithms and digital hardware architectures for system-on-a-chip design, nonlinear signal processing and hardware design, time-frequency distributions and pattern recognition and modeling and estimation algorithms for ultrasonic imaging with medical and industrial applications.
Saniie earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1974, a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1977 and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1981.
