Alumnus Michael D. Smith Promoted to Full Professor at Carnegie Mellon
University of Maryland alumnus Michael D. Smith was recently promoted to Full Professor of Information Technology and Marketing at the Heinz School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University.
Prof. Smith has served as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University since 2000. He was promoted from Assistant Professor to Dean’s Career Development Chaired Associate Professor of Information Technology and Marketing in 2006. He has also held a faculty research position at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a Visiting Professor at London Business School.
He received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) summa cum laude in 1991 and his Masters of Science in Telecommunications Science in 1996 from the University of Maryland, and later received his Ph.D. in Management Science and Information Technology from the Sloan School of Management at MIT in 2000.
Smith received the Master’s of Information Systems Management program’s top award for teaching excellence in 2004, and he was nominated for this award again in 2005. From Carnegie Mellon’s chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, he also received the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2002.
Smith's teaching focuses on the application of information technology to adapting business practices and industry structure and competition.
He is currently featured on Carnegie Mellon's home page for his research in the area of digital rights and piracy.

Smith's father, David K. Smith (B.S., EE, '64), and sister, Virginia (Smith) O'Connell (B.S. in Engineering and an MBA from the Smith School), are also University of Maryland alumni.
