International students will be contacted by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to verify visa status and collect the financial documents required to receive Form I-20 or DS-2019, which are needed to obtain a student visa.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)

ISSS assists international students with the application process, handles visa and reporting requirements, and helps you make the most of your academic experience here.

ISSS requires that all new international students attend a Welcome Check-In to collect required information (such as copies of your immigration documents). Students must register to attend the Welcome Check-In session of their choice.

ISSS also organizes International Student Orientation to answer any questions that may arise as you make your transition to the University of Maryland. The Welcome Check-In and International Student Orientation will be announced as the Fall semester nears.

International Teaching Assistant Evaluation

All international students who will be serving as teaching assistants in the Fall, including fellows, are required to take the International Teaching Assistant Evaluation given by the Maryland English Institute (MEI). The department will provide MEI with a list of the students required to take the exam.
