Commencement Recap: Graduates Encouraged to Help Others Through Service, Sacrifice

Students graduating from the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering were honored at the 2006 Commencement Ceremony at the Cole Student Activities Building on Monday, May 22.

Commencement speaker Linda Gooden, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin Information Technology and a Clark School Board of Visitors member, encouraged graduates to better the world by combining their knowledge of engineering and technology with a commitment to "service, sacrifice, and selflessness." Gooden recalled the "Greatest Generation" of World War II, asking graduates to model themselves upon the courage, service, and selflessness of that generation of Americans in addressing present-day global problems.

In the 2006 class, there were 96 students graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and 35 graduating with a B.S. in Computer Engineering. Fifteen B.S. graduates in Electrical Engineering received Departmental Honors—Eduardo Arvelo, Mohammed Eslami, Alex Frey, Borna Ghavam, David Harrah, Victor Jeng, Jeffrey Lee, Yang Lin, Alan O'Connor, Michael Reilly, Aaron Shaffer, Mehmet Ucal, James Wienke, Joanna Wong, and Avinash Yentrapati—and five B.S. graduates received Departmental Honors in Computer Engineering: Arnab Choudhury, William Cladek, Michael Horak, Erin Kravitz, and Fushpal Suri.

There were 36 students graduating with an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, 24 graduating with an M.S. in Telecommunications, and 15 graduating with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
