Students Selected as Finalists for Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship
A team of two Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) graduate students, Filiz Yesilkoy (advised by Marty Peckerar) and Timir Datta (advised by Pamela Abshire and Elisabeth Smela), have been selected as finalists in the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship competition.
They were one of two University of Maryland (UMD) teams to be selected among the 10 East Coast finalist teams. The other UMD team was comprised of Computer Science graduate students Ching L. Teo and Yezhou Yang, advised by Prof. Yiannis Aloimonos and Prof. Hal Daumé III.
For the East Coast Finals, there were four teams selected from MIT, two from Rutgers, two from Princeton, and two from the University of Maryland. There were 11 teams selected for the Northern California Finals, and 12 teams selected for the Southern California Finals. In all, Qualcomm received applications from 146 teams to select 33 finalist teams from across the nation.
The East Coast Finals will be held at Qualcomm Research in Bridgewater, NJ on Tuesday, Apr 19, 2011. The student teams will be asked to deliver a 15 minute presentation describing their proposed research project. Eight winning teams, chosen from the 33 finalists, will be announced by Qualcomm on May 15.
