ECE Welcomes Dr. Zhambyl Shaikhanov

Dr. Zhambyl Shaikhanov has joined the ECE Department as an Assistant Professor. He joins the department from his recent position as a Ph.D. Research Assistant at Rice University.

Shaikhanov received both his MS and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University, after earning his BS from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to beginning work on his graduate degrees, he was employed at the Dell Server Networking Lab in Round Rock, Texas.

His research interests include next-generation 6G and beyond wireless, including millimeter-wave and sub-THz networks. Beginning with a theoretical foundation, his work involves designing prototypes to demonstrate new wireless systems and architectures with applications in networking, security, and sensing. 

As the recipient of a number of awards, Shaikhanov has been recognized in several areas of wireless communications. He was awarded a Best Demo Awards at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) 2023 Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications (HotMobile), and the 2022 ACM Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks (ACM WiSec). In addition, he received a Texas Instruments Distinguished Fellowship and a Rice Electrical and Computer Engineering Fellowship.

The University of Maryland Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering welcomes Dr. Shaikhanov.
