Alumnus Hyun Jung (EE Ph.D. 2016), a bioinformatics analyst at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, recently took first place in both parts of a medical imaging grand challenge for pathology.

The Pathology AI Platform challenge (PAIP2019) was part of the MICCAI 2019 Grand Challenge for Pathology. Its goal was to evaluate new and existing algorithms for automated detection of liver cancer in whole-slide images. The challenge was hosted at the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2019), one of the most prestigious conferences in medical imaging.

The two tasks given in the challenge were liver cancer segmentation and viable tumor burden estimation. Jung participated in both tasks and was ranked first in each of them. A total of 794 participants entered the challenge.

At Maryland, Jung was advised by Professor Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR) and was a part of the MEMS Sensors and Actuators Laboratory. His doctoral research investigated the impacts of stress and stress gradient in Li-ion battery electrodes on Li-ion battery performance.
